10 things you should be doing before every wax appointment

Walking into your appointment prepped isn't just about being polite to your esthetician — it's the difference between a smooth, low-pain wax and a rough, less effective one. If you're booking a wax in Vineyard, UT or anywhere in Utah County, here's your pre-wax checklist.

# 1. Exfoliate 24 Hours Before

This is non-negotiable. Exfoliating a full 24 hours before your appointment (not the same day, and not the night before) lifts dead skin cells and helps the wax grip the hair instead of the skin. Do it too close to your appointment, and you'll leave skin irritated and more sensitive to the wax.

# 2. Skip the Same-Day Lotion

Lotions, oils, and heavy moisturizers create a barrier between the wax and your hair. Shower and moisturize the night before instead, and come in with clean, product-free skin.

# 3. Shower Beforehand

Showering removes sweat, bacteria, and surface oils that can interfere with wax adhesion. A clean canvas means a cleaner, more effective wax.

# 4. Let Your Hair Grow to at Least 1/4 Inch

Wax needs something to grip. If you've been shaving between appointments or you're too soon after your last wax, the hair may be too short for the wax to catch properly.

# 5. Avoid Caffeine Before Your Appointment

Caffeine can heighten skin sensitivity, which means more discomfort during your service. If you can, skip the coffee on wax day.

# 6. Take an Over-the-Counter Pain Reliever (If Needed)

If you're sensitive to pain, taking an OTC pain reliever about 30–45 minutes before your appointment can take the edge off. Always check with your doctor first if you're unsure.

# 7. Wear Loose, Breathable Clothing

Tight clothing right after a wax can cause friction and irritation on freshly waxed skin. Loose cotton bottoms make the ride home a lot more comfortable.

# 8. Avoid Sun Exposure and Tanning Beds Beforehand

Sunburned or tanned skin is more sensitive and more prone to irritation from waxing. Give your skin a break from UV exposure in the days leading up to your appointment.

# 9. Skip Retinols and Exfoliating Acids for a Few Days Prior

Products with retinol, glycolic acid, or salicylic acid thin the skin and make it more reactive to waxing. Pause these products for at least 2–3 days before your appointment.

# 10. Communicate With Your Esthetician

Let your esthetician know about any medications, skin conditions, or sensitivities before you start. This isn't small talk — it directly shapes how your service is done and helps prevent unnecessary irritation.
